How to rotate or flip images

Why photos show up sideways
Cameras and phones often save photos in one orientation and add a note in the file's metadata saying which way is up. Some apps and websites ignore that note, so the photo appears sideways. Rotating here saves the pixels the right way round, so the photo looks correct everywhere, with no metadata needed.
Rotate or flip?
- Rotate turns the image 90° at a time, like turning a printed photo on a table.
- Flip horizontally mirrors the image left to right. It's useful for selfies, which front cameras often save mirrored, so text reads backwards.
- Flip vertically turns it upside down like a reflection in water.
Does rotating reduce quality?
JPGs are re-saved at high quality, so any change is invisible in practice. PNGs are lossless and lose nothing.
