What's an ICO file?
An .ico file holds several copies of the same icon at different sizes, so Windows and browsers can pick the sharpest one for each place: a 16 px version for a browser tab, 32 or 48 px for the desktop, and 256 px for large icon views.

Non-square images
Icons are square. If your image isn't, it's centered with transparent space added, so nothing gets cropped.
